Day 2: March 22, 2008

Pulled Over in Liberal.
I awoke around 7am to drive. I drove for about an hour then I got pulled over. The speed limit quickly changed from 45 to 30 driving into this small town called Liberal in Kansas. I think someone made a joke about seeing a cop and then I saw one. I was just mad at myself and frustrated. I knew I wouldn't let this ruin my trip though.

This is New Mexico, just about 40 miles from El Paso.

I then drove to a Pancake House a few miles down the road. We had a big breakfast and then headed out again. I drove until about 12:30. Then I slept some more in the back of the van. We got into El Paso around 5:30. We beat the other van because they tried to take a shortcut. We all went out to eat at Cracker Barrel. It was a great meal, but afterwards the tiredness set in.

After that we went to Pastor Steve Nelson’s house (pictured above). He has a pretty big house that he bought and fixed up alot. They have a great house for housing missionaries and having BBQs. Steve and his wife Kathleen have 7 kids: Blaise, Hope, Silas, Keziah, Malia, Jireh, and Jaza. There were quite a few people awaiting our arrival. They greeted us very cheerfully. We all gathered together in Steve’s family room to go over the plan for the week. I stepped back to take a picture and knocked the clock of the wall. Several small pieces broke off of it. I was pretty embarrassed, but Tom the other pastor shrugged it off. I can tell they weren’t upset. So we gathered together with a team that had come from Columbia, Missouri. There were also members of the Rio church plant there. About 25 people made the move from Fort Collins and Greeley, Colorado to start the church. It officially started about January 2008. I’m amazed at their sacrifice, their trust in God and their vision for this church.

Our chief project will be to invite people to the grand opening of the new location of the church. They were meeting at a hotel and for the last month have been meeting in a cafeteria at Hornedo Middle School. We will be placing door hangers on people’s doors promoting a new series at the Rio called “The Family Secret”. We also offered our services to the church families if they had any needs. We wanted to do any kind of work projects to bless them. We prayed together and then we headed out to get some sleep. Our group was split up for the night. Jason, John and I stayed at Pastor Tom’s house. Tom and his wife Mandy have two kids: Gabe and Jack.
